Stanley Recalls 2.6 Million Travel Mugs Due to Burn Hazard Risk

Stanley, the well-known brand for durable outdoor gear and drinkware, has announced a recall of approximately 2.6 million of its Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs in the United States due to a potential burn hazard. The company stated that the lid threads of these mugs can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, which may cause the lid to detach while in use, creating a serious burn risk for consumers.

Hazard and Injuries Reported

Stanley has received 91 reports worldwide of the lids detaching during use, including 16 reports in the U.S.. These incidents have led to 38 burn injuries globally, including two burn injuries in the U.S. In total, 11 consumers required medical treatment as a result of these injuries.

The recall affects double-walled stainless steel travel mugs that were sold in various colors, including white, black, and green, and in 12 oz., 16 oz., and 20 oz. sizes. The mugs feature a polypropylene lid and display the Stanley logo on the front and bottom. These mugs were sold in stores such as Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, and Amazon between June 2016 and December 2024, with prices ranging from $20 to $50, depending on the model and size.
